Let’s play-SuperSport gets McBain Charles learners active

“A healthy body and a healthy mind go together”

SuperSport‘s Let’s Play programme was devised to address the need for children to become more active in South Africa. McBain Charles Primary School are beneficiaries of this programme which focuses on addressing unhealthy lifestyle choices in primary school learners.

An alarming 20 percent of learners are overweight because children are becoming increasingly more affected by more adult social ills such as inactivity, poor diet, smoking and the consumption of alcohol.

To combat this growing trend, SuperSport have joined forces with schools across South Africa through exercise programmes focusing on health and fitness, physical skills, higher immunity against illness, dietary education as well as improved body-image and self-esteem.

“Playing sport is a wonderful way to improving yourself. Your body becomes fitter and healthier, but at the same time, you build good friendships and learn how to interact with many people,” said Minister of Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula.

Children are exposed to television for prolonged periods of time, an exercise through which they derive no physical benefits. This activity, as well as spending hours playing computer games without any exercise, has a detrimental effect on their fitness levels and is a major contributing factor to obesity in children.

SuperSport Chief Executive Officer Imtiaz Patel, added, “A healthy body and a healthy mind go together. By encouraging more children to participate in some sort of activity will improve the fitness of the population and lead to a healthier, more productive society.”

The Let’s Play campaign aims to increase awareness of the dangers of little to no exercise through maintaining close ties with schools and other organisations which target children such as churches, homes, and communities.

McBain Charles Primary School held a competition on March 24 after several weeks of physical preparation. Learners participated in a number of physical activities such as sprint relay, slalom dribble, hand dribble, hand-eye coordination, chest passes, rugby side passes and hurdles.

The competition has the full backing of the Department of Basic Education and all schools within the Republic of South Africa may enter.

The competition runs from February to November this year and the winning school stands a chance to win a brand new sports facility sponsored by SuperSport Let’s Play.
