Grooming Soweto Tiger Woods for tomorrow

Protea Glen golf tweens had the opportunity to go to World of Golf this weekend to brush up on their skills in preparation for tournaments

My Golf Foundation hosted a tag-a-long trip to World of Golf in Woodmead for their top and most advanced golfers from Protea Glen this past weekend.

Sindy Mqutheni founder of the establishment said, “Our aim is to teach specific life disciplines through the sport of golf.”

Two and a half years after its formation, Mqutheni said it has grown from strength to strength.

“As a golfer myself I remember I used to visit my mother in Protea every weekend with my golf clubs and I would go play at the park in extension four. The local children would be curious and come watch me and ask me questions on the sport;  until it got to a point when I decided to actually start teaching them with what I had.”

From “willing participants” to 30 members, the foundation is growing from strength to strength with sponsorship from Clinix Health Group that provides transportation and paramedic services in case of an emergencies when they host these trips.

Only 18 children were taken this time because they are the most experienced players that are being groomed to enter tournaments to compete as one of the few Soweto-bred players.

“The response has been amazing from the residence especially the parents and they have been really supportive to their children, as they have noticed a change in the behaviour of the children since their introduction to the sport.”

My Golf Foundation is looking at possibly converting the park in Protea Glen extension 4 into one of the first driving range golf grounds in Soweto to host tournaments.

“I always tell my players that they need to focus because when you play golf it’s relevant to understand the importance of time, always remembering the processes, it teaches them strategy and it teaches them to be calm and disciplined,” said Mqutheni.

The demand for the sport is growing in Protea, and keen aspiring players can register with the foundation by sending them an email on mygolffoundation@gmail.com .

Age groups range from six – fourteen, and the training session are Mondays from 4:30pm – 5:30 pm, Wednesdays on the same time and on Saturdays at 4pm.

Mqutheni thanked their sponsors World of Golf and Clinix for their ongoing support of equipment and transportation.
