Clash of the stars sees Soweto All Stars clinching the Discovery Challenge

Soweto All Stars won the 12th edition of the Discovery Challenge and scooped the R70 000 prize money.

Soweto All Stars were crowned the Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge champions after beating Mofolo All Stars 4-3 on penalties at the imposing Nike Training Centre.

The win saw the team taking home a trophy, gold medals and a R70 000 handsome cheque.

The match ended in a 1-all draw in regulation time before going to penalties.

Crowd favourites, Soweto All Stars were stunned by an unexpected goal from their opponents when Mofolo All Stars broke the deadlock in the first half through a well taken header.

With the backing of their supporters, Soweto All Stars came back strongly in the dying minutes of the game to grab the equaliser, forcing the game to penalties.

The tournament was playing for the 12th year with 56 teams taking part and it attracted more than 8 000 spectators.

Under the auspice of Soweto Football Association (SFA), the tournament has been successful since its inception and SFA chairman, Phil Mogodi said it has produced professional players.

Speaking at the end of the tournament, Mogodi thanked fans and teams who made the tournament a great deal of success.

“Year by year we see tremendous growth and this is evident in the number of crowds that we see here.

“Our goal is to get youngsters off the streets during this time of the year and for the past month, we believe we have done just that,” said Mogodi.

Thato Moetsi walked away with both the player of the tournament and top goal scorer after netting 12 goals.

He received R5 000 for both achievements. The tourney kicked off on December 1 in honour of the late liberation struggle hero, Walter Sisulu.
