Soweto Marathon to cater for 21 000 runners

This year’s Soweto Marathon will have 260 JMPD officers to assist with traffic and road safety and they will be complimented by 300 experienced marshals from local running clubs that will oversee activity on all three routes.

The Nike Soweto Marathon organisers have confirmed that a total of 21 000 runners will take part in the “People’s Race” on November 2.

The race will start and end at the Expo Centre at Nasrec.

President of Central Gauteng Athletics, James Moloi said due to the involvement of experienced and passionate partners the marathon will offer the very best race experience.

He said the City has committed to organising 260 Johannesburg Metro Police to assist with traffic and road safety and they will be complimented by 300 experienced marshals from local running clubs that will oversee activity on all three routes which are the 10km, 21km and 42km.

In order to provide further support, 282 private securities have been contracted to assist at the start and finish lines in order to manage the runners as they set out on their journey.

The experienced Maponya 911 Medical Services have been brought on-board to provide medical assistance on the day.

Race Director, Banele Sindani said due to the time of year and in order to make sure athletes achieve their best on race day, 21 water points will be dotted along all three routes.

This will result in runners having access to a refreshment station almost every three kilometres. Gates will open at 4am and the first race will start at 6am, the second and third will start at 7am.
