Child protection through sport

Fun day on Human Rights Day.

World Vision Orlando along with Orlando Athletics held a children’s sports day last Friday on Human Rights Day at Communal Hall in Orlando East.

The morning began with a 5 km fun walk and later all participants played indigenous games.

“We felt that it would be a great way to celebrate Human Rights Day by getting the children involved in sports. We as World Vision believe that every week is Child Protection Week, so the message we want to pass forward to the children is that they use social media in a safe and responsible manner,” said Tholakele Zulu Solomon World Vision project manager.

She also said that since World Vision has been in Orlando they have been more reports of child abuse related cases.

“We have been going around schools and also doing some door to door campaigns encouraging children to report any child abuse cases. Through working closely with Orlando Police Station we have come to find that more cases are been reported which is a good indication,” she said.

Sibongile Maruta from Orlando Athletics said that a sport is an effective way of sending message to children.

“When World Vision came up to us to propose this event we were excited as we feel it is important to send the message of child protection through sport,” she said.

Maruta also said children tend to be more outspoken when they are involved in sport.
