Wowen’s National Basketball Association star, Ruth Riley hosted a basketball clinic for 60 youngsters from the Boys and Girls Club from Pimville.

The clinic was hosted in Alexandra and was aimed at promoting the sport in townships.

The NBA donated a basketball court to the club last year in order for the children to get active and be trained by local basketball coaches in the area.

The association even provided a childcare facility which caters for hundreds of children with its partner, McDonald’s in August during Basketball Without Borders Africa, the event which was officiated by both NBA and McDonald’s representatives.

It was graced by the presence of NBA commissioner, Adam Silver who was in the country for the development camp at the time.

Riley, who is no stranger to Africa is involved in the community development activity in the continent and this was her second visit to South Africa as she was in the country in 2012 and visited the Royal Bafokeng scholastic league in the North West Province, which is a partnership between the NBA and the Royal Bafokeng Nation.

She plays for the Atlanta Dream and when she is not on the court, she spends a great deal of time assisting community outreach programmes in various parts of the world.

She generously gave her time to share some of her valuable knowledge with the bright youngsters from the Boys and Girls Club.

Riley has been travelling to Africa regularly with NBA Cares’ Nothing But Nets initiative and travelled to Nigeria, Angola and Mali in 2007.

The campaign distributed more than four million life-saving bed nets to those in need in different countries in Africa.
