Makhanya nominated for sport awards

Mapaseka Makhanya is the only woman nominated in the fashionable Sports Star of the Year category.

The list of nominees for the 2013 South African Sports Awards which offers some familiar South African personalities and lots of newcomers was revealed, last month.

Among the awards’ beginners is local athletics sensation, Mapaseka Makhanya, who is the only woman nominated in the fashionable Sports Star of the Year category which goes out to public vote.

Minister of Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula, said the beauty of sport is that you reap what you sow.

“You put in the hard work and it will pay off.

“Most of the hard work is done away from the spotlight, in the early morning training sessions, the sacrifices, the strict diets and so on. We are so pleased that we are able to honour and celebrate individuals like Mapaseka, who are super achievers,” he said.

Makhanya is the current 1500m and 5000m South African champion and has achieved international success by winning the 1500m meet in Mauritius in April this year and participating in the World Championships in March in Poland as part of Team South Africa.

“Her prowess is not limited to the track as she is the winner of the Spar Women’s 10km Challenge which she won in a record time of 32 minutes 49 seconds.

“Makhanya recently won the 2013 Gauteng Marathon, the first time a South African female took home the prize,” Mbalula said.

The public is invited to vote for their favourite sporting heroes in the Sports Star of the Year category.

To vote, one can dial *120*8883# “Sports Star” followed by the number 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5.

1 is Itumeleng Khune, 2 is Chad Le Clos, 3 is Mapaseka Makhanya, 4 is Hashim Amla and 5 is Lucas Sithole.

Voting closes on Sunday, November 17, at 9:30pm and the winners will be announced at a sensational event at Sun City.
