Soweto boxer reaches SA finals

Mpanza Boxing Club shows the South African boxing community that Soweto boxers can compete at a professional level.

The Mpanza Boxing Club was part of the Gauteng boxing team that went to the South African Boxing Championships.

The club was represented by Thato Bantsheng who was one of the two boys from Soweto.

The championships were held in Bethlehem in the Free State.

Bantsheng was beaten at the finals.

The coach of the Mpanza Boxing Club Gideon Mpanza said that the competition was tough.

“Instead of fighting in the 48 kg division, Bantsheng fought in the 52 kg division. He won the first match by knock-out and unfortunately he was taken out in the finals,” he said.

Mpanza said that he is proud of Bantsheng for reaching the finals.

“We have shown the South African boxing community that Soweto boxers can compete at a professional level. We are ready for every competition that comes our way,” he said.

Mpanza said that they are preparing for the Olympics.

“We want to be part of the 2016 Olympics. We will be entering every local competition from now on so that we are ready to represent South Africa in the future,” he said.

Mpanza said “We are calling people who are interested in sponsoring the gym to contact us.

“The gym takes young people off the streets so that they don’t engage themselves in drugs and crime. People who want to help us achieve the aim of developing local talents are welcome,” he said.
