Total South Africa helps talented learners progress in sports

Total South Africa, is proud to be associated with the school’s talent advancement initiative.

Get Ahead Sports Programme (GASP) taking place in Soweto this week. GASP, is a talent advancing vehicle aligned to Sport South Africa’s Long-Term Development Plan and was launched in collaboration with Iconage Holdings and a number of corporate partners.

This week, 180 young learners – who have shown exceptional talent and potential for development in sports – will be engaging with expert coaching teams who will assist in and improvement of the learners’ sporting and sport-leadership skills. The coaching team consists of exercise experts from Virgin Active, Cricket South Africa and Tennis South Africa.

The programme affords opportunities to athletically talented, school-going children, located in all communities to advance in sports. This initiative is a natural extension of Total’s – Move-It, Moving Matters® programme which was launched in South African schools in 2010.

The Move-It, Moving Matters® programme ensures that learners in the intermediate phase engage in age-appropriate and enjoyable physical activity each week. It is designed to facilitate the development of complex neuro-physical connections which underpin the development of one’s ability to adapt to complex and changing environments.

The funding commitment from Total South Africa, enables 5 000 intermediate phase learners, within 40 schools to participate in the programme on a weekly basis. Teachers who volunteer to assist with running the Move-It, Moving Matters® programme receive professional training in facilitating the activities.
