1st Things 1st is a non-profit organisation that was established in 2016 and it offers extra lessons to high school learners and their focus is in Soweto, starting with Diepdale Secondary School.

AGCS has recently hosted the Allianz Move Now Progamme in the school as a way of helping and facilitating the learners access to various opportunities as well as encouraging them to keep active through sport at school.

The learners spent the day playing netball and soccer against Fidelitus Secondary School and had the privilege to learn about different careers through UJ students and some of the Allianz staff members.

According to 1st Things 1st managing director, Amanda Sebolai they have been offering assistance to Diepdale grade eight learners since 2019 and through their time in the school they have implemented the Kip McGrath English and Math remediation programme which is aimed at helping learners improve their English comprehension and Math skills.

“The classes on these subjects take place on Saturday and every learner is assessed and placed on their level of reading.

“These learners attend a 90 minute class every Saturday to improve their level of reading, comprehension and spelling.

“Each class takes six learners at a time, giving each learner individual attention. Some lesson activities take place on a computer,” explained Sebolai.

Sebolai also said they will soon be building a small library in the school and they are thrilled by the donation as it supports their strategy of instilling a love for reading to all learners in the school.

“Our vision of enriching young lives, ensuring future success is realised by providing an integrated student enrichment programme in a safe, uplifting, challenging, disciplined and fun environment; calling for excellence in everyone.

“The upcoming library is a step closer to ensuring success in our learners at Diepdale.

“Improving English comprehension through the love for reading will help learners improve their marks in all their subjects not just English,” Sebolai said.

She added that their next step is to start with the building process of the library and expressed heartfelt gratitude to AGCS for pledging this donation.
