Partnerships brings food donations to Eldos community

Local residents came out in numbers with the queue ending at the gate. This is done annually to relieve locals of the stresses of not having food.

The Department of Social Development (DSD) together with Food Resilience Unit distributed vegetable packs for the community of Eldorado at the Greater Eldorado Park Youth Innovation Hub Centre on October 9.

“The Department of Social Development came here to donate vegetables to the community at large.

“This will help many people, especially because there are many pensioners and unemployed people in Eldorado,” said Nicholas Mabe, project coordinator at Greater Eldorado Park Youth Innovation Hub.

He also said he encourages the youth to join the hub as it will help with sharpening skills and computer literacy which is essential in any job market.

With the high unemployment rate and feeling like they are marginalised, the vegetables will be of great benefit to the families.

Faith Adams, a resident of Eldos said she is unemployed and the vegetables will help for a couple of days.

“I stay with my three grandchildren, son and his wife and these will help for about three days. I also have to say that this should make our government realise that the unemployment rate is high.

“There’s a lot of youth here who probably have matric and hold some form of qualification but here they are to collect vegetables to make sure that they have something to eat,” said Adams.

Phyllis Vilakazi, the board chairperson of the Greater Eldorado Park Youth Innovation Hub, also reiterated that this is a cry for help to the government about the high rate of unemployment.

“These are to assist people who most likely have no source of income. The centre also plays a pivotal role for the youth.

“They are trained or equipped with certain skills so they can fend for themselves and their families. Most of all we would like to thank DSD for this. It will make a huge difference in the homes,” said Vilakazi.
