The National Consumer Commission (NCC) began a week-long inspection of local shops on October 10 at Naledi Extension and Tladi.
This follows the tragic death of six children after they allegedly consumed poisonous food from a local spaza shop in Naledi.
Speaking to the media, NCC inspector, Tebogo Motseta said they received an invite from the City of Joburg to inspect local spaza shops in Soweto following the tragic event.

“We as the NCC has a mandate to regulate all goods and services which are distributed to the public. We have to ensure compliance in the market and that products of high quality are offered to consumers,” he said.
Motseta further stated they found many shops in Soweto who are non-compliant. “Some of them don’t even have proper labelling in terms of ingredients or any branding.”
He said the NCC will issue the non-compliant shops with notices.
“The inspections don’t end here today. We will continue with our work.”
