NALEDI FIVE: Residents shut down foreign spaza shops after deaths

A total of six children ate the snacks but one of them Katlego Oliphant (7) is still alive fighting for his life in hospital.

Following the recent death of five children in Naledi Extension, the disgruntled community members have shut down all foreign-owned spaza shops.

It is alleged that the victims, all under the age of 10, died after eating snacks they bought from one of the foreign national spaza shops.

According to the information received, six children ate the snacks but one of them Katlego Oliphant (7) is still alive fighting for his life in hospital.

“Katlego is in ICU at Lesedi Hospital. He is fighting although things are on and off and the doctors haven’t said much,’’ Katlego’s mother, Lydia Oliphant, said.

Nani Rampou, the grandmother of Karabo (8), said the doctor at the hospital where Karabo was admitted indicated that he consumed something poisonous.

“Karabo came home being carried by one of the neighbours and he was vomiting a brownish substance and also a foam was coming through his nose.

“The neighbour laid him down next to the gate and requested an e-hailing driver because the ambulance was taking too long. When we arrived at the hospital, the doctor checked him and said he ate something poisonous,’’ she said.

Agnes Mabote, the grandmother of Isago, (7), said that when her grandson came home from playing he was shivering.

“Isago told us that he was feeling dizzy. He said that he didn’t feel well and told me that he was going to die. I reprimanded him for saying that and suggested that we sleep a little bit,” said Agnes.

“He was vomiting a brown substance. They gave him milk to drink but his eyes started changing. He was rushed to the hospital and in less than 30 minutes he was confirmed dead.”
