General GTZ; member of iconic Chiskop dies

The 49-year-old kwaito icon died in hospital on Sunday, September 29, after undergoing a major surgery.

A well-known member of the iconic South African kwaito group Chiskop, Simphiwe Sibisi known as General GTZ, has passed away.

The 49-year-old kwaito icon died in the hospital on September 29, after undergoing major surgery.

Sibisi was the last living member of the kwaito group, which was formed in the 90s by him, Mandoza and Lollipop among others.

In a media statement issued on Sunday by the family states it said, “Despite showing some signs of recovery, he took a turn for the worse over the past few days and lost his battle.’’

The family further thanked all those who loved and supported the kwaito pioneer.

“We wish to thank all those who loved and supported him during all these years as a prominent music entertainer of our beloved South African people,” continued the statement by the family.

“May his beautiful and kind spirit live on through the legacy of his kwaito.”
