Book iBhoni takes radio team on a tour in Soweto

Xoli Zondo, 5FM radio sport presenter who was taught how to ride a bicycle on the day, said this was very special to her.

Book iBhoni is a local tourism company with a difference.

They offer discounted tours when people donate books when booking their tours of Soweto through them.

They then collect the books and donate them to community libraries.

This is their way of giving children in the community access to books and education. It is situated in Orlando East.

Nick Hamman, radio host at 5FM, started a Heritage Tour in 2017 where they travel around South Africa to see its hidden gems.

“We’ve been away from home for three weeks travelling and today we are close to Vilakazi Street in Orlando for a bicycle tour.

“I would say being in Soweto is a homecoming moment for us because we have been away from home,” said Hamman.

He went on to say he’d encourage anyone who is not South African to come and experience Soweto.

“What stood out for me is that when you think of Soweto, you think of Vilakazi Street, and today we got to see that there is more to Soweto,” said Marli van Eeden, traffic reporter at 5FM.

The first stop was at Albertina Sisulu Centenary, the tour then headed to the Confrontational Corner, known as ‘Orlando Beverly Hills’ where the Winnie Mandela House is located.

Xoli Zondo, 5FM radio sport presenter who was taught how to ride a bicycle on the day, said this was very special to her.

“To get my team to see the beauty, heritage and historical significance of Soweto is beautiful. We have gone to a couple of the teams’ hometowns like the Western Cape and Pretoria; it makes me proud,” said Zondi.

The tour guide from Book iBhoni, Mpumo Mtintso, gave the team the history behind all the landmarks and stops located in Orlando West.

The tour then continued to the Confrontational Corner, the Winnie Mandela Mountain where there was an oversight of Orlando East and then the last stop was at the Mandela House.

The team went back to the Book iBhoni to sign the wall of fame.
