Diepkloof karatekas claim their victory

The karate tournament is held annually and rotates among the provinces. It also celebrates and commemorates women in sports.

As the country wraps up Women’s Month celebrations, Kofukan South Africa recently attended the Karate South Africa National Development Championships and Women’s Cup held in Mpumalanga, Secunda.

The Diepkloof-based karate team was represented by the Maduna twin sisters, Karabo and Karabelo, Holla Rangongo, Katlego Maduna, Reinhart Goosen and Ongezile Moseta.

The karate tournament is held annually and rotates among the provinces. It also celebrates and commemorates women in sports.

Sensei Thabo Molubi of the Kofukan South Africa said that it was heartwarming to see parents and karatekas from all the provinces of South Africa in attendance to support their development karatekas.

“As always, the Maduna twin sisters rise to the occasion when an opportunity presents itself and took part in the 10 to 11 years Elite Kata Division in the Women’s Cup.

The karate tournament is held annually and rotates among the provinces, and also celebrates and commemorate woman in sport.

“They battled it out on elimination rounds knocking out their opponents until they both reached the medal bouts.

“Karabo reached the finals and managed to scoop a silver medal in kata. Her sister showcased her skills and scooped a bronze medal in kata as well,” sensei Thabo Molubi explained.

He added that they took part in kumite on their respective weight divisions. Karabelo was the cream of the crop as she won a gold medal in her division and Karabo also did well in her kumite division and managed to scoop a bronze medal.

“I am delighted with the results of this twin sister especially when one takes into account where they come from with karate. They are young and already at their peak, winning medals in every tournament.”

Holla Rangongo took part in the 14 to 15 years elite kata division of the Women’s Cup which was hugely contested, she did not fail to shine even though the division was tough.

Rangongo scooped a bronze medal on kata and later won a silver medal in her kumite division.

“Katlego Maduna took part in the kata 16 to 17 years on the development side, which was also hugely contested, but that did not deter our rising superstar who eliminated all his opponents and booked a spot in the finals on his division. Katlego scooped a silver medal in his kata division.

“He later took part in kumite and fought fiercely to make it to the finals. He managed to win a silver medal also on kumite.

“I am really happy to see my athletes excelling so well on the national level. All the hard work we are putting into our training every week is paying off.

“On September 13 and 14, we will be travelling to Pretoria to take part in another national tournament which is called Karate South Africa League 2. I am optimistic that my athletes will do well there as well.”
