In a statement, the former City of Johannesburg Speaker said she decided to join the MK, led by former president Jacob Zuma, describing the party as the one that will steer South Africa into the future, bringing about constructive, transformation and advancement into the society.

“This giant leap that I am taking today is a great and historical step towards a role and responsibility that we as young leaders of South Africa, especially women leaders in this generation, must rise, be counted and volunteer ourselves to carry,” said Makhubele.

Makhubele stated that she believes that the MK party had provided a platform for young progressive leaders to find a political home for expression and services.

On the MK party and what it stands for, Makhubele said the party has become a beacon of hope to unite and rally African leaders and their people and a barometer of African politics.

“Without any fear of contradiction, we must acknowledge and accord the MK party for its place in history as a serious organisation, intent on bringing a new style of leadership, science and organised unity to black politics.

“The entire nation and the continent of Africa are riding on the MK party to bring back respect for the dignity of an African in the 21st century,” she said.

uMkhono Wesizwe also released a statement welcoming Makhubele.

Party Spokesman, Nhlamulo Ndhlela said Makhubele’s announcement could not have come at a better time as it is Women’s Month.

“Her sheer brilliance and tenacity of championing the revolution and unapologetically standing out what is fair and just ties well with the new era the party finds itself chartering, which is one characterized by bold political strategy, unwavering commitment to the people and a clear vision for the future,” he said.

Ndhlela further stated that they are confident that Makhubele will not only confidently defend the revolution but she will work to help the party in achieving economic freedom in this lifetime and rightfully returning land to the people.
