Alumni share the history of Musi High

The book titled ‘Musi Musing Celebrating Our Alma Mater’ is a historical narration that recounts the various journeys, struggles, memories and experiences.

Musi High School Alumni hosted a book launch event at the 16 June 1976 Interpretation Centre in Central Western Jabavu on August 28, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the founding of Musi High School.

In support of the launch were Musi Comprehensive High School, Soweto History and Archives Projects, Wits History Workshop and Xarra Publishers.

The book titled Musi Musing Celebrating Our Alma Mater is a historical narration that recounts the various journeys, struggles, memories and experiences that Musi high alumnus went through when they were learners at the school.

Musi Musing was edited by the late Reverend Themba Mntommbo who played a significant role in making sure that the book is more engaging.

Speaking to Urban News, Secretary General of the Musi High Alumni, Themba Skhakhane said, “This book consists of contributions from former learners. In the book they are actually relating their personal experiences during the time when they were learners at Musi high from 1948 all up to the current learners.”

He further stated that the book aims to educate readers about the rich history of the school, while also giving them the opportunity to engage with the people who have given their tales.

During the launch, former Musi High School teacher, Manchadi Matjila who was known as Nee Mathabe was honoured with a certificate of acknowledgment.

The Musi High alumni expressed their gratitude and respect to the former teacher.

Matjila said the day was one the proudest days of her life, and she is appreciative for being a part of the Musi High School history.

“This is one of the proudest days of my life, to see students, to see former teachers and to see everybody celebrating and honouring Musi High School.

“I am a former student of Musi high and I also taught at the school, I am who I am because of Musi high. I am also very happy that the students that I taught are taking the battle forward, nil desperandum!” said Matjila.

One of the people who shared their stories on the book, Muzikayise Tshabalala said he had amazing experiences at Musi High School and it was easy for him to relive them.

‘’Musi high has groomed me, sharing my story brought back a lot of memories. Sharing them was not really that difficult because I was sharing something real and all I had to do was just relive those experiences and that’s why it was easy for me to put them in black and white,” said Tshabalala.
