She reminded them about the 1956 women’s march that took place on August 9 where women of different races marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against pass laws that limited their movements.

“As women, we have worse challenges today than we did during the apartheid era, challenges of drugs, crime, gender-based violence and poverty. How women and children are being killed calls for a march to say enough is enough,” said Cllr Dammie.

Gloria Mzimba from Old Mutual Financial Wellness was one of the guest speakers of the day.

She spoke about money and the importance of budgeting as a person.

“If you can’t control your money there is nothing you can achieve, budget is the most critical thing we do as people,” said Mzimba.

She further gave out steps on how to do budgeting which include understand how much money is coming in, understand the things that you do with money and always monitoring and keep track of your expenses.

Women from different parts of Soweto came in numbers and took part in the event to celebrate each other.

Topics such as GBV, health, money and other issues related to the community were discussed during the event.

Ntombi Nkosi from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) made the attendees aware of the child support grant top-up that grandparents who are taking care of their grandchildren can apply for.

“The first requirement for one to qualify for this kind of a grant is that they must provide us with information of parents of the children they are taking care of and their whereabouts. One should be deceased or both of them,” said Nkosi.

Nkosi also announced that SASSA does assist in communities should some disasters result in property damages.

Residents can approach the ward councillor and get a referral letter that they can submit to SASSA offices to be assisted with food vouchers and if there is a life lost, they issue money vouchers.
