Thembu Primary learners taught SA history

Sanlam Retail Mass Unit spoils learners with an educational tour of the Apartheid Museum and gifts.

The learners of Thembu Primary School (TPS) received school bags, stationary, Sanlam merchandise, and a life-changing trip to the Apartheid Museum arranged by the Sanlam Retail Mass Unit (SRMU) on August 2.

TPS is local school based in Zone 6, Pimville. It is a government school that accommodates learners from many poverty-stricken families.

According to the Secretary of Pimville United Brothers and Sisters (PUBS), Tshepo Vana, August 2 will forever be etched in the minds of 67 learners from TPS.

This initiative was part of SRMU’s corporate social investment (CSI) in celebration of Nelson Mandela Month and 30 years of democracy.

“What better way to commemorate this milestone than to educate our learners about our past and the achievements we have made as a country,” said Vana.

SRMU took it upon themselves to take the learners to the historical site to have an experience they will cherish and remember for a long time.

The curriculum-orientated tour afforded children an invaluable opportunity that was not only memorable but educational as well.

During the tour, PUBS members, together with the teachers and tour guides from the museum, ensured the safety of the kids.

“The learners, accompanied by members of the SRMU team and teachers from the school were divided into two groups, with each group having its own tour guide.

“The jovial mood and excitement amongst the learners reflected Sanlam’s commitment to uplift communities and empower the youth through education,” added Vana.

After the two hour curriculum-orientated tour, the SRMU and NPO representatives handed over gifts to learners, including lunch packs, school bags, note pads, pens, and Sanlam-branded regalia and caps.

The Deputy Principal of TPS, Kholiswa Mgidi, along with two learners and a representative from PUBS, expressed their gratitude to the company for the humanitarian gesture and unforgettable experience this tour afforded the learners.

Mgidi was grateful for the continued support Sanlam has been giving to them. This follows last year’s Nelson Mandela Day visit to the school, where the company and PUBS donated sanitary pads, soup and 200 pencil cases for the learners.
