PRASA distances itself from travel card scam

PRSA spokesperson, Andiswa Makanda said the scammers promise unlimited annual train travel passes for R 56.

The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) wishes to alert the public about a fraudulent scheme currently circulating on social media, falsely advertising an ‘annual subscription’ travel card for Metrorail customers.

PRSA spokesperson, Andiswa Makanda said the scammers promise unlimited annual train travel passes for R 56.

Metrorail has confirmed that such an offer does not exist, and PRASA emphasised that official ticket sales only take place at train stations and on-board trains, she further explained.

Metrorail does not provide annual subscription services or passes, and neither Metrorail nor the government are associated with such a programme.

“The photographs of the travel card clearly point to its fraudulent nature because in South Africa the word ‘subway’ is not used.

“The fake photographs have been created by criminals attempting to deceive and defraud unsuspecting members of the public,” said Makanda.

Safety Tips

Metrorail customers are urged to be vigilant and cautious.

• Please do not engage with or respond to any offers or promotions that do not originate from official PRASA channels.
• If you encounter any suspicious activities or offers, report them immediately to PRASA or your nearest police station.
• If an offer seems too good to be true, it almost certainly is.
• The passenger rail is already South Africa’s safest and most affordable means of transport.

“Your safety and security are our top priorities. We appreciate your vigilance and cooperation in combating these fraudulent activities,” she concluded.
