Rami Chuene Foundation makes learning fun at Nkholi Primary School

“The aim here is to help and empower the kids. We are all about colour because it enhances and stimulates creativity in children."

Nkholi Primary School was a hive of activities on Friday last week during the annual arts and culture day extravaganza.

The celebratory event saw learners from the Pimville Zone 2 based school perform various acts from poetry to drama, dancing and music to entertain the crowd.

It coincided with the fourth anniversary celebration of the Rami Chuene Foundation which added more fun to the day’s activities.

The Rami Chuene Foundation in collaboration with Splash Coatings Africa and Metro World Kids made it an impactful event by bringing an educational element to the day.

Actress, author, singer and presenter Rami Chuene spoke to the learners about the importance of taking pride in their home languages and the role they play in fostering social cohesion.

Metro World Kids representatives engaged in fun activities with the learners, educating them about bullying and other social issues.

In keeping up with the aim of making the event impactful, Chuene and her team got their hands dirty and painted five classrooms at the school.

“The aim here is to help and empower the kids. We are all about colour because it enhances and stimulates creativity in children.

“It is also easier for the kids to be happy when their environment looks happy,” said Chuene, outlining her reasons why they chose to paint the classrooms.

This was part of the Splash Dreams Campaign spearheaded by the Rami Chuene Foundation together with Splash Coatings Africa.

The campaign targets schools in townships and rural areas across the country to paint classrooms and give them some colour so that children can learn in a happy environment.

The campaign is close to Chuene’s heart because she believes children need to always be in an environment that motivates them to be creative and enjoy leaning.

She said, “It’s like a clean canvas and it makes it easy for a child to think more creatively.

When it’s all over the place and dull, it becomes too clustered and that kind of holds the children back.

“That’s why we don’t like dark colours that are not happy, we want colours that will bring joy and make children look forward to go to class.”

The Splash Dreams Campaign has been running since last year and it goes beyond just painting classrooms. They also do book donations, food parcels and help with vegetable gardens for those schools that need them.

The foundation is all about an all-rounded approach to education for children from local communities.

Chuene thanked all individuals and organisations that have been collaborating with her for the benefit of children.

She also thanked Nkholi Primary School for allowing them to come to the school and make their contribution.

Deputy Principal, Madeline Malefane said it was a special day for the school made possible by the Rami Chuene Foundation together and Metro World Kids.

“We also had an art exhibition by our leaners and we are very proud, proud of our culture and our language as well as a Sotho speaking school,” said Malefane. “Thank you so much to Rami and her team for coming forward to help make sure that our children learn in a happy environment.”
