Local NPO helps parents register for school

The centre is assisting families without cellphones, computer devices, internet access or adequate literacy to navigate the system.

The Kliptown Youth Program (KYP) recently began assisting parents and children with online registrations for school placements through the Gauteng Department of Education’s online admissions system.

The system was recently reopened by the Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Matome Chiloane at Diepsloot Youth Centre in preparation for the 2025 academic year.

It was reopened on July 11 at 08:00 am for Grade 1 and Grade 8 applications and it will close on August 12 at midnight.

KYP has encouraged parents to visit the centre at Portion 57 of the farm 298 IQ, Klipspruit, to begin applying and avoid waiting for the eleventh hour to complete this process.

Parents in need of space for their children queued at the Kliptown Youth Program to apply for placements on the Gauteng Department of Education online admissions system.

The centre is assisting families without cellphones, computer devices, internet access or adequate literacy to navigate the system.

According to the spokesperson of KYP, Lizzy Makutu, the centre has assisted over 100 parents and children with applications so far, but they are expecting more people.

She said the centre has always opened its doors to assist community members with online applications beyond the school admission application.

“Even before we moved into the building on July 18, 2022, the centre was helping the community but our work started advancing after moving to the new building because it offered more space and resources,” said Makutu.

She said older people and generally mothers visit the centre for the GDE online applications or any other online applications because they do not understand these online systems.

Applicants are advised to bring the required documents including a certified copy of ID document, certified copy of the child’s birth certificate, proof of address and recent school report.

KYP also clarified that they are not GDE employees and cannot help but refer late applicants to the department. For more information contact KYP on 011 528 8670.
