Para’demics Edu Centre hold 4th annual walkathon at Devland
Parents of children living with disabilities came out in numbers to support the event and celebrate their children with special needs.
Para’demics Edu Centre held its 4th annual walkathon at Devland Ext 27 on June 14 to celebrate people living with disabilities under the theme ‘learning has no limits’.
The community came together to commemorate the day, celebrating the diversity inclusion, and resilience of individuals living with disabilities.
Mbalenhle Youth Club escorted people participating in the walkathon with their drum majorette’s activities, alongside the City of Johannesburg emergency management services (EMS).

Gugu Manana from the EMS reminded the community about their mandate which is to save lives and raise awareness about safety in the community.
Attendees were also reminded of steps to take in a case where there is an emergency.
“The first step is to know which number to call in case of emergency and know how to communicate the problem instead of making videos your top priority,” Manana said.
She further reminded the community of their 112-emergency number which operates for 24 hours daily.
Parents of children living with disabilities came out in numbers to support the event and celebrate their children with special needs.
Buhle Phakathi, a parent of a young boy living with autism spoke of how difficult it is to manage an autistic child and how society misunderstands children with such a condition.
“As a society that is not educated enough about autism, let’s stop separating these kids because they are just the same and the difference can be managed if we treat them equally,” said Phakathi.
Ikhethelo Learning Foundation representative, Sarah Mqadi emphasized that they want to be part of inclusiveness and holistic learning and how the Para’demics Edu Centre needs so much support from the community to become a success.

Shonaquip Social Enterprise representatives, Councillor Thobile Zondo of Ward 119 in Freedom Park and Siyaya Skills Development Centre were part of the people who gave insightful information and showed how grateful they were for such an initiative in their community.
Thandekile Khumalo, the founder of Para’demics Edu Centre who hosted the walkathon expressed her gratitude and how grateful she was that the community and parents came in numbers to celebrate with her and be part of the walkathon.
