Klipspruit Library hosts Child Safety event for local schools

Many stakeholders honoured the invite and showed up to the stage to bring the relevant information to the learners who had attended.

The Klipspruit Library held a Child Safety event in commemoration of Child Protection Week which is celebrated in hopes of raising awareness about children’s rights.

Learners from various local schools got to be informed more about their rights and responsibilities as children.

The schools in attendance were Motjoli Primary School, Lulama Primary School, Batsogile Primary School, and Winnie Ngwekazi Primary School.

This event aimed to promote activities to stop accidents and harm from occurring to children and to increase awareness about the value of child safety since it is Child Safety Month.

It also educated parents, teachers, and learners about potential threats to children and preventive steps to maintain their safety.

“I think the passion we have for children and their safety in our community and the high rate of kidnappings and human trafficking incidents that are taking place currently is what really pushed us to come up with the idea of this event,” said Humphrey Mathato, Senior Librarian at the Kipspruit Library.

Some of the stakeholders who were part of the event.

“We are very happy with the response we received from the invited schools and the performances they organised.

“On behalf of the City of Johannesburg and Region D libraries, our wish is to make sure that these events and awareness campaigns take place throughout the year.”

Many stakeholders honoured the invite and showed up to the stage to bring the relevant information to the learners who had attended.

They included Dube Emergency Medical Services, Eldorado Park Crisis Centre, Kliptown SAPS, South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA), Nhlanhla Tshabalala Foundation, National Sea Rescue, Coach of Edolweni Klipspruit, and Councillor Kwapeng.

Constable Nonkululeko Buthelezi from the Kliptown SAPS commented on how happy she was with the participation of learners at the event.

“The learners are very clever I must say. Their participation was strong all the way and they didn’t lack anything.

“I hope as they grow it does not stop, instead they become more like this because we are looking at them as the future of this country,” Buthelezi explained.

Some of the things that played a huge role in putting smiles on the children’s faces were donations made by Pick n Pay Maponya Mall in a form of party packs and Spur Maponya Mall which donated food.

Busisiwe Doreen Nhlapo from the EMS explained the importance of them becoming part of this event.

“For us, it’s very vital to come to the community because it is an opportunity to also educate about what is it that we do daily.”

She also added that next time they would love to bring more education about safety the children.

“Given enough time to plan we would also have designed something for the learners to see and engage on. I felt that this year we only had to focus on emergency numbers only since it’s winter and people are using different sources of heating their houses,” added Nhlapo.
