National Child Protection Week marked in Protea North

National Child Protection Week this year was observed from Wednesday, May 29 to Wednesday, June 05 under the theme of Every conversation matters, every child in every community needs a fair go.

The Johannesburg Youth Crime Prevention Desk District in collaboration with the Protea Crime Prevention Desk, Community Policing Forum and Monica Lolwane preschool, celebrated the National Child Protection Week on June 05 at Protea North.

National Child Protection Week this year was observed from Wednesday, May 29 to Wednesday, June 05 under the theme of Every conversation matters, every child in every community needs a fair go.

According to the YCPD District P.R.O Moses Seaga, the national children’s protection week means educating and raising awareness about the significance of young children, knowing their rights, practicing their rights and most of all acknowledging their responsibilities.

“This day serves as a reminder that every child deserves to be loved, cared for and protected, and that we all have a role to play in making that happen.

“Through such initiatives I believe that the public will learn the importance of taking care of the young ones and guiding them in the right direction for a brighter future,” explained Seaga.

The Youth Desk singing and dancing, along with the puppet performance, were among the things that excited the little ones.

Everything about the day was filled with joy and laughter.

CPF chairperson, Sipho Kubheka expressed his gratitude to everyone that helped make the day a success.

He said “today was a great event and it would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of the youth desk.

“Their contribution was crucial in making sure the day transpired as beautifully as it did.

“Seeing the firefighters and the SAPS creating relationships with the little ones was an additional honour, hopefully, this day will dispel the stigma associated with young ones being afraid of the police.”

Protea Social Crime Coordinator, Constable Alvinah Makhari said they want kids to understand that police are there to protect them rather than to frighten them.

“As police officers, we want the children to feel safe and not fearful of us.

“Rather than being enemies, we want to be allies and give them the freedom to feel free when they see us. I hope that this event will contribute to that,” she said.
