President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his confidence in the Electoral Commission’s ability to deliver free and fair elections with no interference.

The president was speaking outside his voting station at Hitekani Primary School in Chiawelo after casting his vote.

He said he was happy to see so many people out to take part in the democratic process and it was a beautiful day for democracy.

“I heard that voting has started throughout the country and it is going well. This is a day when South Africans decide, decide on the future of our country and who should lead the government,” said Ramaphosa.

While everything was still going well on Election Day, Ramaphosa did express concern over reports of sabotage.

“We are concerned about the incidents that have been reported. Incidents where the IEC raised concerns and even where the police had to intervene and arrest those who were interfering in the work of the IEC,” he said.

The President also sent a warning to those who might want to interfere with the work of the IEC saying they would be interfering with the country’s democracy.

No incidents been reported in Soweto since voting stations opened this morning.

Long queues of people waiting to cast their votes could be seen as early as 8:00 in the morning.

Ramaphosa was accompanied by his wife and they both cast their votes in Chawelo.
