ActionSA visits abandoned hostels in Soweto

According to the ActionSA Joburg caucus leader, Cllr Nobuhle Mthembu as a political party they have noted that relevant departments are distancing themselves from these uncompleted projects.

ActionSA Joburg Caucus recently went on a quest to observe two abandoned projects which are part of the Soweto low-cost housing projects.

The first project that was visited was the Dube Hostel, which allegedly cost R95 million.

The construction of the flats kicked off in 2009 and is currently in a dilapidated state as it has been vandalised before beneficiaries could be moved in.

The second project that was visited by the members is the Mzimhlophe Women’s Hostel, which has been partially completed.

According to the ActionSA Joburg caucus leader, Cllr Nobuhle Mthembu as a political party they have noted that relevant departments are distancing themselves from these uncompleted projects.

“We will stop at nothing to ensure that there is accountability. In a city where accommodation proves to be a challenge, we strongly believe that it is unwise to abandon buildings that will bring the city one step closer to addressing the housing backlog,” Mthembu said.

ActionSA Joburg Caucus has embarked on a mission to reclaim the hijacked buildings within the City of Johannesburg.

She added that they have embarked on a mission to reclaim the hijacked buildings within the City of Johannesburg and convert them into affordable rental units and sectional title buildings.

”We are pleading with our residents to allow these projects to continue without any objections and pay the minimum amount that is required for the upkeep of the units,” Mthembu concluded.
