ECD educators taught about fire safety

In keeping with its mission to increase public knowledge of fire safety, Working on Fire has focused on Early Childhood Development centers in an effort to instill a sense of responsibility for fire safety in young learners.

Early Childhood Development educators in Soweto received life-saving training to strengthen fire safety measures at local day-care centres.

The workshops were conducted in Meadowlands and Naledi and drew a minimum of 30 teachers. The aim was to promote an understanding of fire safety and awareness amongst educators.

The Fire Awareness cluster has been effectively equipping educators with fire safety information.

Working on Fire Programme’s Fire Awareness Cluster in Gauteng held the workshops in partnership with Shoprite.

Meadowlands ECDs educators

According to Jabulile Shabalala, the officer in charge of the Fire Awareness Training Programme, they want to train educators from 30 centres.

The workshops aided in strengthening the educators’ knowledge and skills to address fire threats at the centres.

‘‘This goes a long way to save the lives of educators and learners. The educators would know how to respond to fire incidents.

“Hence they need to be empowered with knowledge and skills to deal with fire incidents at the centres,’’ explained Shabalala.

The practical exercises included using fire extinguishers, identifying the assembly points, drawing evacuation plans and crawling low under smoke to mention a few.

The City of Joburg’s Social and Health Department identified the trained educators in fire safety.
