ActionSA donates sanitary towels to school

“We believe that all female learners have the right to dignity and therefore it does not make sense why our learners are still without sanitary towels."

ActionSA Councillors led by their Caucus Leader, Cllr Nobuhle Mthembu, visited Lofentse Girls High School to donate sanitary towels as well as to motivate learners on January 18.

The political party donated a total of 450 sanitary towels which will be distributed to the learners by the school, especially to those from underprivileged families.

Cllr Mthembu said they are pushing a motion that was declined three years back in council for schools within the City of Johannesburg to receive free sanitary towels since a lot of learners miss school due to the lack of sanitary towels.

“We believe that all female learners have the right to dignity and therefore it does not make sense why our learners are still without sanitary towels.

“We are therefore going to champion this motion next month in council to try to see if this time it can pass. We cannot have young girls missing out on school because of such a natural thing,” Cllr Mthembu said.

She added that part of the reason they visited the school was to choose girls that have a potential to attend her Girls and Women Leadership Academy as a way of advancing their leadership skills.

After engaging and motivating the learners, two girls from the school were chosen to be part of the academy based on their listening skills, comprehension and responding to questions asked by the Cllrs.

“This initiative means a lot to us as ActionSA because this is where women empowerment starts. We are here as women in leadership positions to assist the learners in every way we can.”

This was their first visit to the school and going forward they will be revisiting the school in March to see the progress of the learners and note challenges faced by the school management.

“Our relationship with the school is all about changing the mind-set of the learners and redirecting their focus to make them aware that they are made for greatness and that they can achieve whatever they set their minds to.”
