Soweto Farmers Market closes gap between businesses and consumers

They do not only seek to bring a version of the lifestyle event to ekasi, but also seek to create a platform and a bridge between local producers and consumers.

The Soweto Farmers Market (SFM) second annual event is set to take place on November 26 at the Soweto Equestrian Centre in Rockville.

This is anticipated to benefit local businesses.

Also, in partnership with Soweto Film Festival that will be celebrating 40 years of their existence, they will be conducting a documentary on the life of legendary Enos Mafokate.

The market is a kasi centred instalment on the same level as the likes of Fourways Farmers Market, Neighbour Good Market, and others.

They do not only seek to bring a version of the lifestyle event to ekasi, but also seek to create a platform and a bridge between local producers and consumers.

Mbulelo Ntshatsha, founder of SFM said, “We want to showcase and celebrate local producers as these individuals are the creators, the trendsetters and the pathfinders who often struggle to get the recognition and support they need.

“Never mind the shelf space they deserve at the well-known retailers dominated by well-known brands that are well-resourced.”

The team chose to host the event at the renowned Mafokate’s Equestrian Club to provide Sowetans with a farm environment which is something rare in townships.

“We use this venue because it adds that organic, farm-like, rustic, family friendly element to the event.

“Locals will get to experience horse riding and a horse jumping show, which is something not typical or available at Soweto events or markets and is a first of its kind feature,” said Ntshatsha.

This is also not just about shopping and giving businesses exposure but about community engagement.

“This is also a form of job creation because we will get people to be part of our security,” he concluded.
