The South Gauteng High Court recently sentenced 34-year-old Nhlanhla Buthelezi to life imprisonment for the murder of his 4-year-old son.

The incident occurred exactly a year ago, on the morning of September 2022 when a drunk Buthelezi, went to the home of his girlfriend, Zamokuhle Ntuli in Snake Park.

A verbal fight between the couple broke out and he allegedly said, ‘there will be a movie today’ and left.

Later on the same day at around 19h00 in the evening, Buthelezi returned back to his girlfriend’s house and asked about the whereabouts of his girlfriend and left again.

He shortly returned back and took four year-old Bafana Ntuli who was at home with his aunt and siblings.

The accused dragged the deceased on the streets, while the aunt chased after the accused, asking him to stop dragging the young boy.

“The accused stopped but stabbed the deceased the deceased several times with a knife. The aunt ran and screamed for help and the community responded,” the NPA said.

The accused fled the scene and left the four year-old bleeding out on the street.

Residents who searched for Buthelezi found him and brought him back to the scene where he was later apprehended by members of the SAPS.

In court, State Advocate, Allie Keith Mathebula argued that the accused was fully aware of his actions when he committed the crime.

“The accused went to the deceased’s place of residence on numerous occasions, saying a movie would be played, disputing the paternity of the deceased, carrying a weapon.

“This demonstrates that the accused was in his sound and sober scenes when he planned the commission of the offence.”

Judge Khumalo MP, who delivered the sentence, stated that there were no compelling and substantial circumstances that would convince the court to deviate from handing down the prescribed minimum sentence for the crime he was convicted of.

The NPA welcomed the sentence and commended Advocate Mathebula and Investigation Officer Captain Maluleka for giving justice to the family.
