Labour disputes at Rea Vaya leave commuters stranded

Thousands of passengers were left stranded on Thursday morning after the bus company announced that busses would not be operating.

Rea Vaya bus operations will remain halted until further notice as internal struggles continue.

The suspension of services entered into a second day on Friday, leaving its desperate passengers yet again to seek alternative transport as the bus company failed to give a positive update to commuters.

It is understood that an ongoing labour dispute between bus drivers and the bus operating company, PioTrans, was at the center of the current halting of bus services.

Thousands of passengers were left stranded on Thursday morning after the bus company announced that busses would not be operating.

Similarly, last week, Friday passengers were left to seek alternative transport after the bus service was temporarily suspended due to ongoing labour dispute between the two parties.

Earlier this year, Joburg MMC of Transport Kenny Kunene intervened on the unsavory relationship between the two parties after drivers downed tools and embarked on a strike following conflict among the shareholders and threats of non-payment of salaries to bus drivers.

At the time, Kunene convened a meeting with PioTrans, drivers, and union representatives to seek an urgent resolution to get the buses back on the road.

On Thursday, commuters took to X (formerly Twitter) to slam the company for “poor service” and “disregard for its passengers” citing that PioTrans had on several occasions failed to provide a seamless service.

The publication has sent an inquiry and will update readers when a response is received.
