‘Our doek, our pride’ local women

"The support we received from communities over the ears has been amazing and we call on more women and men to join us this year.”

As this month marks and celebrates the cultural wealth of our nation, Basadi Ka Dituku called on women to wear their traditional doeks (head wraps) with pride during a media launch hosted at Sakhumzi Restraint on September 15.

Also marking their eighth anniversary, Basadi Ka Dituku was founded in 2015 after a young black woman was discriminated for wearing a head wrap in the work place and was deemed as inappropriate.

After the story made it to social media platforms, Basadi Ka Dituku hosted a launch for local women who came in numbers to the event, wearing their head wraps to appreciate and honour what it means being an African woman and wearing a head wrap with pride.

“We are an annual event that focuses on women from all walks of life, a fun and very educational experience.

“Being a woman in South Africa is not easy as a result of the backlash and socioeconomic challenges that women face on a daily basis.

“Basadi Ka Dituku allows us to engage and discuss these challenges and it brings women together to celebrate our achievements, share ideas, eat, laugh and dance together,” co-founder of Basadi Ka Dituku, Lungile Masondo said.

Masondo added that their theme for Heritage Day is to remind African people of their origin and celebrated who they are with pride.

For this year’s event, Basadi Ka Dituku will host a picnic at Malobane Estate and Spa Lodge on September 30.

“This year’s hash tag is #TukuYaRona and we are going to have so much fun, celebrating what it means being a black woman.

“We have also as an extension of the purposes, adopted a group of men who are a proud part of this movement.

“The support we received from communities over the ears has been amazing and we call on more women and men to join us this year.”

Basadi Ka Dituku is also proud to announce the relationship they have formed with the LGBTQIA+ community and giving them a space in the cultural sphere as well as acknowledging them in the celebration of heritage and culture.

“We usually dictate their ability to work in the cultural space, but who are we to decide for them.

“If there is no place that the LGBTQIA+ community belonged when it comes to wearing a head wrap and celebrating their heritage then Basadi Ka Dituku is definitely home.”
