More wins for local karatekas

The much anticipated tourney was held from September 15 to 17 and it also consisted of the Women's Cup, Karate South Africa second league.

The Diepkloof Kofukan Gauteng Karate Team travelled to Bloemfontein, Mangaung Region this past weekend to attend the Karate South Africa National Development Championships.

The Diepkloof Kofukan Gauteng sensei, Thabo Molubi said, “The atmosphere was out of this world, seeing karatekas from all over South Africa coming together to compete for a spot in this championships.

“Kofukan Gauteng entered four of its top athletes to compete in the championships and these athletes have been with the club for the past four years and they surely deliver when tasked to perform.”

He added that this was their last development tournament and they will be competing on their respective elite divisions from next year.

Serole Rangongo.

“Our rising star, Holla Rangongo dominated both her Kata and Kumite divisions and eliminated all her opponents.

“She scooped two gold medals for Kata and Kumite, together with her brother, Serole Rangongo, who stepped up to the occasion and clinched two silver medals in his respective divisions, which is Kata and Kumite.”

As compared to any other competitions, the Maduna twin sisters, Karabo and Karabelo rose to the occasion with Karabo winning a bronze medal on her Kata division and scooped a silver medal in the finals on her Kumite division.

Karabelo also managed to scoop a bronze medal on her Kata division and also a bronze medal on her Kumite division.

“The division that was most interesting was the team Kata event for girls. It was so nice to see the Kofukan Gauteng Team Kata Girls battling it out in the finals with the Western Cape team.

“Unfortunately our girls lost out in the finals and managed to scoop a silver medal. I am super proud of my team and the level of competence that they have shown over the years.

“We only entered four athletes for this national tournament and they managed to win eleven medals, two gold medals, three silver medals and six bronze medals.”

“It feels so great to see Diepkloof and the entire Soweto being represented by this athletes in national level. The next stop is the upcoming Johannesburg Regional Karate Trials which will be held from October 14 to 15.”
