Old Mutual roadshow champions equal access to education for Sowetans

“The long-term success of our country and communities depends on inclusive and transformative social development."

In an effort to foster quality education in South Africa, Old Mutual embarked on an annual nationwide roadshow where they visited Vuwani Secondary School in Chiawelo on Wednesday, September 06.

The purpose of the roadshow is to showcase Old Mutual education support for matriculants under the theme of ‘changing tomorrow through education and caring for communities’.

Five schools were invited with an aim of championing quality education for learners.

Zoleka Cima, Regional Manager for Old Mutual Gauteng said, “Old Mutual has a legacy of supporting education in our country. We believe it is only through education that we can break the chains of poverty, bridge the inequality gab and empower all learners with an opportunity to shape their destiny.”

After engaging with learners from these five schools, majority of them mentioned that they were confident with their academics and know for sure they will pass.

However, receiving funding was a problem which made them question their future after matriculating because they had no knowledge about funding companies.

“This event has opened our eyes to believing that our future is bright. I had no hope because I was stressed about getting funding and where to search for it, even though I have written my NBT exams and did well.

“But today they told me and other matriculants that our dreams are valid,” said Usenathi Khitshini, matriculant from Ibhongo.

As part of the initiative, learners will gain access to Matric Live, a multifunctional educational app reinventing how they receive information through contextual, visual, and not just theoretical teaching.

Phumudzo Sathuma, science learner from Vuwani explained that, “This is a beneficial event as children who come from less privileged communities will be given an opportunity to gain knowledge about funding companies. Now we have the ability to become who we always dream of becoming.”

Learners will also gain access to Velle which enables public school communities, including educators, parents and learners, to adopt digital tools and platforms that enhance school-based and home-based learning.

“The long-term success of our country and communities depends on inclusive and transformative social development.

“Through financial education and school activations, this roadshow will empower young people with tools to determine their future,” said Tabby Tsengiwe, GM of Public Affairs and Sustainability at Old Mutual.

The Old Mutual Roadshow will provide a platform for matriculants to access crucial information about applying for National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funding, bursaries and university and TVET college applications.
