The school moved from 58.9 percent to an average of 80 percent recently, demonstrating a significant increase in the confidence and morale of teachers and learners after the establishment of the centre in 2018.

Allianz Commercial selected two young girls to represent South Africa in their Allianz Move Now Camp which took place in Munich, Germany from August 31 to September 04.

Among the selected two girls who represented South Africa was Tinyiko Shiburi (16) from Diepdale Secondary School and Rachel Wayne from Thomas More College in Westville, KwaZulu-Natal.

According to the CEO of Allianz Commercial South Africa, Thusang Mahlangu, in partnership with the Olympic and Paralympic Movements, Allianz Arena and FC Bayern Munich, Allianz set the stage for participants to try out Olympic and Paralympic sports during the programme with pro athletes and expert coaches for an international group of around 30 teenagers.

“We officially began our eight-year worldwide partnership with the movement in 2021, building a collaboration with the Paralympic movement since 2006.

“As a supporter of the sports ecosystem and through shared core values of excellence, friendship, inclusion and respect, Allianz is excited to care and deliver for the ambitions of young people,” Mahlangu said.

Some of the activities at the camp included soccer, flag football, wheelchair basketball, and exploring new sports.

Soccer training sessions took place at the official training ground of FC Bayern at the legendary Säbener Straße and Basketball activities at the FC Bayern‘s youth academy, the FC Bayern Campus.

Allianz began their relationship with Diepdale Secondary School back in 2017 through programmes such as the Allianz Maths and Science Centre and an enrichment program in partnership with 1st Things 1st to improve educational outcomes.

Diepdale Secondary School also hosted the local Allianz MoveNow Camp towards the end of 2022, which saw over 1400 young people from Soweto attend a career expo and participate in a football and netball challenge.

In partnership with former Banyana Banyana captain, Portia Modise and retired international netballer, Dumisani Chauke, the programme encouraged learners like Shiburi to stand a chance of being part of the global camp.

The principal of Diepdale Secondary School, Johaness Munakisi said, “Shiburi deserves this trip as she performs well academically, particularly in Mathematics, Physical Sciences and English. She displayed good communication and outstanding leadership qualities during the interview process and she is passionate about sports and plays soccer at the school.”

Shiburi said this was a one of a kind opportunity for her and expressed gratitude to Allianz and her school.

“I would like to thank Allianz for picking me for this awesome opportunity and I hope that they allow other students to experience this programme.

“Being a part of it has taught me the importance of keeping fit and healthy as it contributes to our mental health as learners,” Shiburi said.
