Grade 9 learner in Meadowlands stabbed and killed

Police were at the scene to monitor the heightened tensions and called for calm, pleading with the group of learners not to take the law in their hands.

The Gauteng Department of Education has sent its condolences to the family and greater school community of Thuto-Lore Secondary School following the tragic death of a grade 9 learner at the Soweto school.

The 15-year-old teenager from the learning institution in Meadowlands East was stabbed to death with a knife on August 29 in a robbery attempt.

It is reported that the learner was stabbed in the chest, when he was being robbed of his bicycle of which he fought for, leading to the suspect, a 19 year old stabbing him before fleeing the scene.

Following the incident angry learners at the school in Zone 1 went on a rampage in search for the alleged suspect on Wednesday with the intention to avenge the learner’s death.

According to reports, the manhunt by the group of learners went to one of the suspect’s home, threatening to set the house alight.

“It was during the commotion that the group of learner’s ransacked a shack and searched an outskirt mine dump where the suspect was believed to be hiding.

“Department of Education’s Steve Mabona commented, “The Gauteng Department of Education is regrettably aware of the passing of a Grade 9 learner (16-year-old) from Thutolore Secondary School on Wednesday, August 30 outside school premises. The learner was unfortunately stabbed and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

“Our Psycho-Social Support Unit also visited the school to provide necessary counselling and trauma support to affected learners and staff. Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident.”

Meanwhile, local Meadowlands SAPS was on the scene to monitor the heightened tensions and called for calm, pleading with the group of learners not to take the law in their hands.

SAPS Spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that the suspect handed himself over to the police, adding that a case of murder was registered with the police.

“A murder case was opened for further investigations on August 29 after the incident.

“We can also confirm that the 19-year-old suspect has since handed himself over to the police on September 01 and he is expected to appear before court soon.”
