Senior citizens donate sanitary towels to local learners

Local elderlies donates 300 packets of sanitary towels to local learners at Protea South Primary School.

It is reported that for teenage girls, having access to period product is essential and without them they can miss school, be embarrassed, humiliated and even get health problems.

In the fight to end period poverty, Protea South Senior Citizens Club donated sanitary towels to local learners at Protea South Primary School on August 22.

According to the chair of the club, Rebecca Tloubatla, majority of schools encounter a high percentage of absenteeism amongst learners and this is caused by the fact that a lot of girls are most likely unable to afford a packet of sanitary towels when it is that time of the month.

“We chose to donate here at Protea South primary because we have acknowledged that most of the learners who attend here are from disadvantage backgrounds and their parents are unemployed and do not have any source income,” said Tloubatla.

Tloubatla added that the club wants to carry out the sanitary product distribution project more frequently because menstruation is something that occurs every month.

About 300 packets of sanitary towels were donated to the school and each young girl from Grade five, six and seven received three packs of feminine hygiene products.

“We are so excited about what the senior citizens club did for the school because most of the learners here come from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Some of their parents can’t afford to buy a packet of pads for their girl child, so with that being said we really appreciate the effort from club,” said Protea South Primary School teacher, Pertunia Ndlovu.

“We are very grateful for the sanitary towels that we have received. Most of us here at school we tend to struggle when we are on our periods due to lack of finances, so we are really thankful for what the club has done for us,” said a Grade seven learner, Mbali Nkosi.
