MMC aims to improve living conditions in Eldorado Park

Human Settlement MMC Cllr Leitch visits Eldos Flats to repair the sewer system.

MMC for Human Settlement Anthea Leitch visited Eldorado Park Ext 2, 4, 6 and 7 on Tuesday, August 15 for a sod turning and fix the unhealthy living conditions of the residents.

After approximately 25 years of being subjected to infectious living conditions of unattended exploded domestic sewage, Cllr Leitch has vowed to restore the dignity of the residents.

“The purpose of today is for something that is long overdue. This is a problem that has been hampering this community for more than 25 years. We are here for water and sewer upgrade of the flats,” Leitch explained.

Sewage spills are one of the major concerns that township communities are facing. These flats are surrounded by only three manholes and all of them were overflowing all around the place.

Resident, Charmain Katz stated how she and her neighbour had to unblock one of the manholes because no one came to their rescue.

“This is long overdue. There was a time when we had to use our own hands to unblock the drain because we had waited for over a year for the sewer people to come. But we really hope that this visit will fix these issues,” she said.

Direct contact with sewage or surfaces contaminated by sewage can result in illnesses such as diarrhea.

“There has been no maintains and repairs done on these flats in all of history under every governing party. They were unable to deliver to the community of Eldorado Park,” said ward Cllr Juwairiya Kaldine.

“However, MMC Leitch has been in office for six months and she finally got it right. Damaged pipes will be replaced with longer ones that will prevent the busting of manholes.”

However, such poor living conditions reveal that majority of individuals do not have access to the perks of this democracy.

“With the amount of years that we have in this democracy, the state that some of these communities are living in is not reflecting that. But with the conditions we are facing today, any change is tangible change,” Kaldine concluded.
