Local school girls learn about coding and robotics

The Girl Code along with Vumatel aims at creating digital skills opportunities for young girls across South African townships and the rural areas.

The Girl Code in collaboration with Vumatel held a school coding tour at Diepdale Secondary School where young girls were introduced to coding and robotics on July 27.

According to the CEO of Girl Code, Zandile Mkhwanazi, the initiative’s goal is to create opportunities in South African townships and rural areas by demonstrating to young girls that there is a future in the profession of coding and a lot of opportunities in the tech space.

“As the Girl Code initiative, we want to make sure that young girls across the country are exposed to technology, coding and robotics.

“With the help of our collaborator, Vumatel we hope to expand this initiative throughout all provinces and give young girl more opportunities for advancement,” said Mkhwanazi.

The CSI and marketing manager at Vumatel, Taylor Kwang said Due to the lack of coding expertise in South Africa, the initiative aims to help change the current scenario by closing the digital divide amongst the youth and also within the community.

“In order to uplift the community and provide opportunities for the youth, Vumatel decided to partner with Girl Code mainly because both organisations have the same purpose that is driven by the same vision,” said Kwang.

Learners were extremely excited to participate in the robotics and coding programme and they interacted very well with the instructors during the learning session.

“I feel like it is a good thing that we are introduced to coding and robotics because I am one of those students who are not really familiar with how to use a computer. This is an amazing opportunity for a lot of us here to get computer education,” said a Grade 8 learner, Unathi Mbuyisa.
