Mandela Day celebration brings fun among local senior citizens

“We have realised that it is important for older people to have fun, so that’s why we have decide to put in practice activities that will allow them to enjoy themselves."

Kaqodo Development Organisation conducted a Mandela Day celebration event where elderly people were invited to take part in fun activities at Zola club house.

Some staff members from Zola clinic also tagged along and planned a few programmes to entertain the elderly.

Various indigenous games were organised so as to provide a platform for the senior citizens to play and enjoy themselves.

“We have realised that it is important for older people to have fun, so that’s why we have decide to put in practice activities that will allow them to enjoy themselves,” said the Project Coordinator, Lisebo Parkies.

Parkies added that it is crucial that they celebrate Mandala Day with the elderly people because it gives them a chance to express their gratitude since some of them were also part of the people who fought for the freedom that we have today.

“This day brings to mind a number of things that Nelson Mandela did for us as South Africans, because of him we are now free from apartheid.

“I am thrilled to be commemorating this memorable day with Kaqodo, this organisation has played a huge role in the lives of the senior citizens in this township. I am really excited to be part of today’s programme,” said a member of Kaqodo, Annie Motaung.

A delicious healthy meal was also prepared for elderlies to consume, following their participation in entertaining activities.

“With the programme we conducted today we want to show people especially here in the townships, that we should forever celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela.

“It is important to continue honouring the life of the person who brought peace for his people,” said Kaqodo Manager, Bongani Tonisi.
