67 Minutes of cleaning dumping sites in Eldorado Park

The Greater Eldorado Park Innovation Hub celebrated Mandela Day by cleaning an illegal dumping site to create a more conducive environment for the community.

Everyone has the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better and Mandela Day is an occasion for all to take action and inspire change.

Mismanagement of waste can cause water contamination, soil erosion and air contamination. Waste can be recycled if collected and managed efficiently.

Nicholas Mabe, Project Coordinator at the Greater Eldorado Park Innovation Youth Hub explained what Mandela Day means to them.

“This day means giving back to the society by spending 67 minutes of free labour. The 67 minutes marks the 67years of Mandela fighting for freedom and equal rights for everybody.”

Nelson Mandela devoted his life to the service of humanity as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, an international peacemaker and the first democratically elected president of a free South Africa.

Tyreen Patience, Miss Gauteng Exclusive 2023 1st Princess said, “Mandela Day is all about inspiring change and I believe through our 67 minutes of serving we can bring about massive changes to the social ills we are currently facing.”

The Mandela Day Campaign message encourages people to use 67 minutes of their time to support a chosen charity or serve in their local community. The 67 minutes symbolically represent the number of years the former President fought for human rights and the abolition of apartheid.
