VIDEO: DA conducts overview inspection at Walter Sisulu Square

MPL Peach wants provincial government to come up with better solutions to redeem the establishment.

DA Gauteng spokesperson, Wildri Peach took a walk around Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown to assess the damage in the establishment which has been destroyed by vandalism.

The square holds an important historical attribution to South Africa’s history being the birth place of the Freedom Charter. A place that was once a prominent tourist hub has turned into a deserted hotspot for criminal activities.

Peach said, “We are here today to do an oversight visit after receiving various reports concerning lack of security and its vandalism.”

An establishment that was built to render services for the community of Soweto, Walter Sisulu Square has been vandalised by the same locals. There is only one department that is still functioning in at the facility.

Thabo Ndlovu who has been a volunteer security guard at the establishment for the past three years said everything has been closed down due to vandalism and the July 2021 unrests.

“The license department is the only department that is still left here but all they do is refer people and conduct collections. This is because they do not have water and electricity,” Ndlovu said.

There are only six security guards that monitor what is still remaining within this historical heritage. Although tourists are still visiting, this place is slowly losing its significance.

“This is an important facility for our heritage in Gauteng and we would to like to engage and see how the province can improve the situation for both tourists as well as local communities,” Peach concluded.
