Local residents are reminded to fill up their buckets

58 hour planned shutdown expected to commence at 19:00.

Joburg Water is urging residents to fill up their buckets ahead of the planned shutdown scheduled to get underway from Tueday evening at 19:00 until Friday at 05:00.

The purpose of the shutdown is to replace aging infrastructure.

The water utility said the shutdown is critical to improving infrastructure reliability and availability as well as to reducing unplanned infrastructure breakdowns.

Major upgrades during the shutdown include a tie-in with a new pipeline and the installation of isolation valves at the Vereeniging Water Treatment Plant, Eikenhof pumping station, and Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant.

The water supply at Eikenhof pump station which supplies broader areas In the South of Johannesburg will be reduced by 24% for the period of 58 hours. It is estimated that once the work is completed, the full recovery of water supply will take up to 10 days.

“Johannesburg will supply stationery tankers to hospitals, clinics, municipal offices and police stations. There will also be roaming water tankers to the affected areas across the city,” the water utility said.

Affected areas include:

• Soweto

• Laanglagte/ South Dale

• Roodeport/Randburg
