Suspect dies after attempted hijacking in Mofolo

The officer was approached by four armed males, who allegedly attempted to hijack his vehicle at gunpoint.

On Sunday night of April 9, an off duty police officer, accompanied by a relative became a victim of an attempted hijacking in a residential area in Soweto.

The officer was approached by four armed males, who allegedly attempted to hijack his vehicle at gunpoint.

However, the relative of the police officer who was armed with his licensed private firearm retaliated and exchanged gunfire with the suspects along Keswa Street in Mofolo South.

The suspects thereafter drove off and the victims gave chase.

As a result, the tyre of the getaway vehicle was damaged during the shootout and the vehicle was stuck in the Eldorado Park policing precinct.

“Two of the four suspects abandoned the getaway vehicle, a white Volkswagen Polo and fled the scene.

The remaining two suspects could not escape, as they were injured during the shootout,” explained Eldorado Park police spokesperson, Sergeant Roxanne Gibb.

“Subsequently, one of the two suspects who remained in the vehicle succumbed to his injuries and was declared deceased.

“The 40 year old injured suspect was taken for medical attention.”

Upon investigation at the scene, a firearm and ammunition were recovered and further investigations into the incident are currently ongoing.

The identities of the suspects are known, and the apprehended suspect will appear before the respective court.
