Gauteng officers take part in Youth Month safety programme

EMPD media liaison officer Marie Mashishi said the operation was successful and aimed to educate the youth about safety from crime, gender-based and domestic violence.

EMPD Social Crime Prevention Unit officers highlighted safety awareness through a sports campaign for Youth Month at Sethokga Hostel in Thembisa on June 16.

EMPD media liaison officer Marie Mashishi said the operation was successful and aimed to educate the youth about safety from crime, gender-based and domestic violence.

She said the EMPD shared vital information through sports, interactive questions, answer sessions and one-on-one talks.

Mashishi told the Kempton Express they distributed more than 200 pamphlets to the community of Sethokga. This operation would continue throughout Youth Month.

“We hoped to remind today’s youth about the youth of 1976 and the struggle they went through and remind them about the value and importance of education,” she said.

She added that young people went on the street in their school uniforms to honour and celebrate those heroes who died for better education of this country.

Mashishi explained that such events were crucial because they helped young people to remember, honour and celebrate the youth of 1976.“Young people benefitted a lot because they could meet up with people to talk about the importance of education and what happened in 1976,” said Mashishi.
