According the founder and director of African Child at Work, Thabiso Masigo the NPO aims to take care of the needs of the community by providing nutritional meals and reducing the risk of hunger and malnutrition among vulnerable individuals.

“The NPO was established because we saw difficulties in our community, where we see children going to school without being fed.

“The only meal they receive on a daily basis is the meal that they get from their school nutrition programme,” said Masigo.

The organisation serves different meals such as vegetables, starch and sometimes they go overboard and prepare fruits. The NPO feeds 140 to 160 children every Tuesday.

“My child eats here and honestly I am really grateful to the organisation. I am an unemployed parent and sometimes it is hard for me to provide food for my child.

“I would really love to see the organisation growing because it helps a lot of people who cannot afford to provide healthy food for their children,” said a parent, Caroline Khensani Maluleke.

The NPO has several initiatives beside the Soup kitchen. They have a sanitary pads drive where they give girls from the age of 9 to 18 years a packet of sanitary towels every second week of the month. They also have another programme called vision and hearing where they have partnered with Spec-Savers and PPN to do eye screening and testing in several schools.

“We believe that some of our learners have a problem with their eyes and that leads to the schools not getting an impeccable pass rate,” said Masigo.
