The power failure, which occurred at the early hours of Thursday, disrupted Rand Water operations at its Eikenhof pump station as there is no power supply to the City Power substation there, which in turn was affecting Johannesburg Water’s infrastructure, leaving many suburbs without water.

Johannesburg water urged residents to use water sparingly as it currently did not have an expected time of completion.

“All areas receiving direct water supply from Rand Water will be impacted heavily by this incident. Johannesburg Water is arranging alternative water supply at strategic areas like hospitals, clinics, schools, municipal offices, police stations and shopping centres,” said Nombuso Shabablala, Spokesperson for Johannesburg Water.

According to City Power, investigations revealed that a cable fault occurred after batteries were stolen at the Orlando Switching Station in Orlando West.

“Orlando 88kv lines have been isolated due to a fault which caused fire on the Soweto local feeder board in the early hours of this morning. Initial investigations suggests that this was due to acts of theft and vandalism where the batteries and links were stolen at the station resulting in feeder jumpers being destroyed and taking the whole station down,” City power Spokesperon, Isaac Magena said on Thursday morning.

He said a team was dispatched and is currently onsite working on repairing the infrastructure and replacing stolen batteries.
