Emdeni North house engulfed in flames

Residents came in their numbers to support the family during a prayer session that was conducted on May 19.

An elderly lady lost her life while the other three family members are in a critical condition after their house caught fire in Daliwonga Street, Emdeni North on May 16.

A neighbour, Sibongile Chaka said her daughter noticed the flames at around 00:00 midnight and she quickly informed her about the fire.

“My daughter came to me panicking; she woke me up telling me that our neighbour’s house was on fire.

“I quickly ran to the scene and I found community members trying to stop the fire while others were trying to rescue the victims as they were still inside the house,” said Chaka.

The cause of the fire is still unknown and it is set to be investigated by relevant authorities. During the fire, the family lost everything including important documents, furniture, food and clothes.

A family member, Lindiwe Bukhali said she was called by her sister at 02:00 informing her about the terrible situation. She rushed to the scene and found that the fire had already been stopped and the victims taken to Zola Clinic.

“When we arrived at the clinic, my sister was asked to provide all the victims’ identification details. After a short while we were informed that our aunt had passed on and the other three victims were transferred to Bara due to their critical condition,” said Bukhali.

Family relatives are very grateful to the community for playing a huge role in rescuing the victims.

“As a family we are really shocked and overwhelmed by the whole situation. It’s hard to accept as we are we are still trying to figure out what really happened, we are really confused,” said another family relative, Portia Buthelezi.

Buthelezi added that three weeks back the family experienced a similar situation when their backroom also caught fire but the family managed to stop the fire and no one was injured.
